Major Ship Scuttle Bug
Written by Robert "Xaphod" Goforth
Tuesday, 18 March 2008
The latest patch has captain skill changes, so that's made quite a few people want to respec, and to do that a lot of the time the game makes sure you have three ships or less..

But.. currently the game is deleting the wrong ships in a lot of circumstances. GMs are advising anyone affected by this to file a support ticket (and presumably they'll get you your lost stuff back ASAP)
This is now resolved.

1.2 Downtime Extended
Written by Robert "Xaphod" Goforth
Tuesday, 18 March 2008
The downtime for the patching of PotBS to version 1.2 has been extended to 7:30 pacific time, 13:30 GMT. At present time this is an extension of four hours.

Edit - while the downtime is complete and the servers are live with 1.2.67.0, some people are reporting issues with their clients, where the client is simply refusing to patch. More info when I have it.

Fourth Rates Increasing in Cost
Written by Robert "Xaphod" Goforth
Thursday, 13 March 2008
Aether has posted on the forum regarding upcoming changes to the cost of Fourth Rate Ships of the Line, which mainly seems to be a reduction of durability on the deeds, as well as removing the Mordaunt from turn in rewards:
First, as you can already see on Testbed, we set the durability on all Fourth Rates to two points per deed, reflecting Design's original intent for these ships.

The next change we’re making replaces the royal commendation turn in for a Mordaunt with a Mastercraft Defiant. Originally, the Mordaunt was handed out in those turn-in missions because that reward was on par with Third, Second and First Rate ships. Now that those ships are no longer in direct competition, the impact of the Mordaunt reward increased significantly. That’s why we changed it to a high-end frigate instead of a Fourth Rate. Customers will be able to see this change on Testbed later this week.
Reading between the lines here, the two changes here clearly don't amount to 'a variety of changes', which would lead me to believe that there are other changes they're not mentioning - possibly adding one or more Lineship Bundle to the cost.

Patch Notes for 1.2
Written by Robert "Xaphod" Goforth
Saturday, 08 March 2008
The new patch notes are out, and opinion on them seems divided.. Point-á-Pitre has been held back a bit but people don't seem to mind that too much. What people do seem to be concerned about are - predictably - Nerfs and Buffs to Captain skills, something Taelorn himself devoted a devlog to earlier this month.

The loudest dissenters seem to be concerned that the improvements to Pirate skills do not go far enough towards making Pirates an effective career, and that the skills that have been nerfed will put them at more of a disadvantage.

New Devlog: Troubleshooting and Customer Services
Written by Robert "Xaphod" Goforth
Friday, 07 March 2008
Misha has posted a new devlog talking about common troubshooting issues and customer services:
You’ve no doubt seen the flood of Devlogs about new changes and features coming in 1.2.x, all of which we believe will improve player experience. That’s all well and good for those who can already play. But what are we doing for folks having difficulty playing because of lag or crashes? What about people who have played but then had issues that didn’t get addressed in a timely manner?

New Devlog: Underdog Tools!
Written by Robert "Xaphod" Goforth
Friday, 07 March 2008
Isildur has posted a new devlog talking about Underdog Tools!:
Since well before launch, therefore, we’ve had a plan for what we call the ‘underdog tools’. They’re a variety of approaches to the population issues, from simple UI features to complex back-end PvP calculations. In the simplest terms, they fall into two categories: incentives and modifications.
[...]
The bonus loot we’re rolling out for the first pass at the underdog tools is a 20% chance of a second loot roll, applied to the last place nation. The bonus experience is also applied to the last place nation, and is a 20% increase to experience gained.
[...]
Offensive unrest modification is a bonus or penalty to how much unrest you generate when you generate unrest against an enemy port – by sinking ships, completing missions, etc. The values we’re setting for this modification are a 15% increase to offensive unrest for the third place nation, and a 35% increase to offensive unrest for the fourth place nation. This makes the underdog nations potentially a larger threat, though they still need to field a port battle team capable of winning to follow through on that threat.

Defensive unrest modification is a bonus or penalty to how much unrest is generated when an enemy generates unrest against you – again, by sinking ships, completing missions, and so forth. For this modification, we’re setting the third place nation to -15%, the fourth place nation to -35%, and the first place nation to +20%. This means that it is easier for all nations to attack the current leading nation, and very difficult for any nation to attack the underdog.
