Brady has posted an hilarious new devlog talking about new staff members at Flying Lab's Developer Corral:
|
My name is Brady, and I took over as lead programmer several months ago when Joe moved up to the producer role. My primary focus so far has been to foster a culture of fear and mutual suspicion amongst the programmers. It’s a bit of a shift from the cooperation and mutual respect that Joe promoted. But I believe that after the initial adjustment period, everyone will see that it’s for the best. |
|
Not only is it a really entertaining read, it's also proof if proof were needed that Flying Lab are actively continuing to develop Pirates of the Burning Sea! |

Devlog: On Outages and the Processes Thereof |

Gray Noten has posted a rather nice new devlog talking all about outages, downtime and what processes Flying Lab have in place a the moment:
|
We are constantly working to improve our communication during downtimes. Particularly with unplanned outages, downtime is a very stressful time for both the players and our staff. It can be hard to update the player base when we’re neck deep in a problem, but we try our best to update everyone when there’s news. As avid MMO players ourselves, we understand how frustrating it can be to stare at a login screen or a server selection screen waiting to be able to play. We strive to have the best possible communication with our player base, and if there’s anything we can improve upon, please let us know in the forums!

Devlog: On Ambush Gameplay |

Isildur has posted an awesome and important new devlog talking about ganking - or rather 'ambush gameplay', and what role it will continue to have in Pirates of the Burning Sea:
...
The conclusion I come to, looking at these beliefs: unfair fights—ganking—make everyone have less fun. The ambush gameplay scenario that had lurked at the back of all our decisions was making the game less fun for everyone. Sacred cow or not, it was actively hurting the game.
What does this mean in practical terms? In the short term, not much. Our workload is nailed down long before you see its results, and the 1.5 patch is already more or less settled. You may see minor tweaks to systems—for instance, we’re discussing a battle-start timer that will allow everyone to finish loading into the adhoc instance before anyone can move—but no major revisions in the very short term.
Longer term? We’re going to make ganking go away. There’s an implied ‘to the best of our ability’ attached to that claim, of course, because I don’t actually believe that we can eliminate it entirely. There’s always someone in the wrong place at the wrong time, and there’s always a lurking predator somewhere. But ganking isn’t going to have the protection we’ve been giving it under the guise of ambush gameplay.

Gray Noten posted here about the 1.4 push to live:
Folks-
SOE had some troubles getting the patch distributed, and they are still not completely done. So we're going to be moving this to the normal outage time between 1:30am and 3:30am on thursday morning, Pacific time.
We'll definitely be rescheduling port battles scheduled for that time frame.

Thanks to Gray for keeping up to date. More info when we have it. |

HighLevelMob has posted a new devlog talking about new (1.5) group mission Fortaleza da Luz:
|
Matt and I wanted to concentrate on invoking the emotional response we want in between combats, working off of the idea that a bad guy you can’t see is almost always scarier than one who is on-screen. This sentiment of the unseen generally being scarier than what is seen was echoed by you guys in the In Concept thread that we started a while back to make sure that we were creating something that our playerbase would enjoy.

Joe has posted a wonderful new devlog talking about 1.5:
|
In 1.5, we’re introducing the first steps towards addressing the level of risk in our PvP. The largest of these steps is the Insurance system. Insurance works very simply: when you lose a durability point, you receive an insurance payment that partially compensates you for your loss. The amount of the payment is set on a per-ship basis, and will be related to the production cost of a single durability point on that ship. It’s a direct cash payout, so if you don’t really want a replacement ship, you can invest that money in a different ship, or a different area of the game entirely.
